Things to Do and See in Umbria

There is a wealth of things to do and see in Umbria.  The food, wine, art, culture and architecture are the equal of any in Italy.

Norcia, with its truffles, hams and cheeses is a gastronomic centre par excellence; Orvieto’s duomo is one of the country’s finest cathedrals; Spoleto’s summer festival is one of Europe’s major cultural events; and Assisi’s majestic Basilica di San Francesco contains frescoes by Giotto and others.

The following is a short list of activities and local area info that I hope you find informative and interesting.

Tourist Attractions

There are a wealth of important and interesting sights to visit in Umbria, including the capital of Umbria, Perugia.  Visit the antique fairs in Arezzo (40 mins), or medieval Gubbio (45 mins), and the famous Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi (1 hour).  Florence and the amazing black and white striped cathedral in Orvieto (1.5 hours)are well worth a look.  There are also lesser known but charming nearby hilltop towns of Santa Maria Tiberina, Montone and Cortona.  Hunt down some Piero della Francesco's in Sansepolcro, Monterchi and Urbino.  Visit the markets in Citta di Castello and Umbertide (15/20 mins).

As Ca de Luca is a self catering villa, you will need to visit a supermarket.  My local town Trestina is 15 mins drive from the house and has 2 supermarkets, both of which are excellent.  The Eurospar has a great deli counter and it is possibly to purchase pre-prepared fresh food, it also has a great wet fish counter where you can buy vongole and lots of other delicious fish and seafood.

Trestina should be sufficient for all your practical requirements which includes a post office, newspaper kiosk, baker, butcher, chemist, cafes and grocers.

Umbria is blessed with hundreds of restaurants which are signposted on the roads with a black and white sign.  There are 2 restaurants both approx 10 mins drive away from the villa.  Il Vecchio Granaio in Calzolaro has an extensive menu, and it is essential to book.  The other, La Taverna in San Leo Bastia, is a small pizzeria, again it would be better to reserve a table.  The telephone number is in the information folder at the house.

There are two 18 hole golf courses both approximately 40 minutes away.  For more information please click here for the Golf Club Perugia and here for the Antognolla golf course.

Pony Trekking

Why not see Umbria from a different perspective and go pony trekking, available in our village of San Pietro a Monte.

Trestina has a tennis court which you can book at the bar opposite the Co-op supermarket.

Festivals or Sagra

Umbria has an enormous variety and number of traditional events throughout the year.  The local communities treat these events as an opportunity to confirm their roots and identity and it is a wonderful chance to experience the Umbrian culture and folklore.

Listed below are some of the larger ones that take place:-

  • Spoleto - Festival dei Due Mondi - one of the most prestigious international events and offers performances in theatre, dance, opera, concerts and art exhibitions.  Have a look at their website for more information
  • Montone - Umbria Film Festival
  • Perugia - Umbria Jazz - launched in 1973, today it is one of the most important jazz events in Europe.  The event lasts 10 days with a hundred or so concerts taking place from morning til night among the ancient buildings in the historic town of Perugia
  • Citta di Castello - Chamber Music Festival of the Nations - one of the most important musical events in Italy.
  • Cortona - Tuscan Sun Festival - held in the first week of August, it is an annual music and art festival that takes place within the intimate setting of Cortona's medieval piazza's

There are many other smaller, local festivals or sagra devoted to a particular food e.g. mushrooms, steak, fish, cheese.  Look out for billboards on the roadsides.

Wine and Olive Oil Tasting

Whilst you are driving around the countryside you will find numerous places where you can try the local Umbrian wines and olive oil.  A particular favourite is I Girasole S. Andrea, Molino Vitelli (Niccone Valley)

Lake Trasimeno Beach

There is a beach at Tuoro on the Lake Trasimeno about 50 minutes away where you can windsurf, canoe, pedalo, kite surf (when conditions permit) or take a ferry ride to the islands or just soak up the sun.

Clothes Shopping

If you want to get some designer bargains you could go on a day trip in the Florence direction where a number of designers have a factory outlet e.g. Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Fendi.  More details and directions can be found in the information book at the villa.
